We met Caitlin back in July at the Simply Stylist event. Her blog, Public Lives, Secret Recipes features secret recipes from people in the public eye, allowing readers a “taste” of something they would normally not have the chance to access. We are constantly checking out her blog and trying out some of the delicious recipes featured, and we have teamed up with her to bring you a fun Valentine’s Day recipe!

Valentine’s Day is such a fun & flirty holiday! We are suckers for love and we will take any chance we can get to celebrate it, especially when sweets are involved! These chocolate and cherry cupcakes are the perfect Valentine’s treat and will surely have everyone falling in love! Check out the recipe below and you might just find love at first bite.

Sweet Heart Cupcakes

Ingredients:

[for the cupcakes]
2 cups sugar
1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1 cup whole milk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup boiling water

[for the frosting]
1 cup (2 sticks) butter
4 cups powdered sugar
4 Tablespoons maraschino cherry juice
1/2 cup finely chopped maraschino cherries
pinch of salt

[other tools]
24 paper cupcake liners
serrated knife
small heart cookie cutter
decorative box or cookie tin

Directions:
[for the cupcakes]
1.) Line muffin tin with paper liners. Heat oven to 350*F.
2.) In a large mixing bowl, stir together sugar, flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
3.) Add eggs, milk, oil and vanilla. Beat on medium speed for one minute. Stir in boiling water.
4.) Fill liners 2/3 full with batter.
5.) Bake cupcakes for 18-22 minutes.
6.) Cool completely on wire rack. Meanwhile, prepare the frosting…

[for the frosting]
1.) In the bowl of an electric mixer beat butter until smooth.
2.) With the mixer running, Add 2 cups of powdered sugar, one cup at a time.
3.) Add 4 tablespoons maraschino cherry juice, one tablespoon at a time.
4.) Continue beating, and add the remaining 2 cups powdered sugar, and chopped maraschino cherries. If desired, add 1-2 drops of pink food coloring. Beat until fully combined.

[cupcake assembly]
1.) Use a serrated knife to cut off the top of the cupcake, using the top of the cupcake liner as a guide.
2.) Use a small heart cookie cutter to cut out a heart shape from the cupcake dome.
3.) Spread frosting onto the cupcake base, in a mounded shape.
4.) If desired, sprinkle the cupcake dome with powdered sugar, then gently place top back on cupcake.
5.) Share with your Valentine or someone you love!
